Ultimately, you give your service and devotion for power and you will be expected to "pay up". You can stretch the dogma somewhat, that is why clerics had some alignment leeway, but it only goes so far. Someone who plans to do something dangerous or hidden at night may pray for Shar to turn away eyes, etc.įor clerics, it gets a bit harder, because they are supposed to embody or at least serve that Power´s interests. If you make a risky venture, a sacrifice to Beshaba might not be a bad idea. This would be quite common in pantheism, which honestly should be quite common in a polytheistic setting. You recognize the influence of a certain Power in an aspect of your life and offer tribute to propitiate it. But there is almost always grey areas for the large majority of the gods.įor non-clerics, it´s fairly easy. Cruelty is rarely acceptable for kind people, just like an evil character following a very very good god like Ilmater would be off. It would be a bit harder to reconcile for a god like Cyric or Loviatar obviously. Evil gods can be worshiped just to gain their mercy. Maybe you just worship Talona because you are afraid of being poisoned, it doesn't have to be more complicated than that. It doesn't make you evil, you just don't want to win just because you got lucky, you want to win by the value of your skills. Or maybe your warrior culture believe that winning by luck takes away from victory, but you worship Beshaba to make sure you are not hit by any bad luck, and maybe give some to your enemies. Mask might even be registered as neutral now, I can't remember. Super easy to make a good thief, living in the street, who doesn't want to harm anyone, but worship Mask for his blessing in his thievery. ![]() An easy one is Mask, evil god of thieves and shadows. Good question, and the answer is: it depends. For most mortals, Bane (LE), Torm (LG) and Tempus (CN) have more in common than Helm (LN), Kelemvor (LN) and Hoar (LN). My point is I would try to organize based on the themes of followers than just the alignment of the gods. ![]() I mean they are different, but when it comes down to the big picture a follower of Sylvanus and of Mielliki are very similar. A sailor who worships Umberlee is just like a farmer worship Chauntea (or a merchant with Waukeen, a blacksmith with Gond), so in a way to present them you put them together even if they have almost nothing in common.Īll the nature deities can be put together, and maybe list the portfolio of specifics, basically a character worshiping nature can pick any of them with minor differences. Sure they do it out of fear, but it is still happening and is common practice. Don't reinforce that evil people only worship evil deities, or whatever alignment combination you can think of, it is more complicated than that.Īn evil goddess like Umberlee has plenty of good-aligned worshipers, sailors who won't want to drown or be caught in a storm. A common mistake is using alignments, which is misleading most of the time. I would try to cut the Faerunian pantheon into big themes, like nature gods, or creation gods, or martial gods.
